Somewhere along the way, many of us became experts at serving everyone else.
We answer the phone even when we’re exhausted. We say “yes” when our spirit is screaming “no.” We carry other people’s problems like they’re part of our job description, then wonder why we’re running on empty.
I’ve learned something that changed my life.
The first person you’re responsible for serving is you.
Not because you’re selfish.
Because an empty cup has never quenched anyone’s thirst.
Imagine walking into a restaurant where the chef hasn’t eaten, the waiter hasn’t slept, and the kitchen has no food. How could they possibly serve anyone well?
Life works the same way.
When you protect your peace, you’re not pushing people away—you’re preserving the best version of yourself so you have something real to give.
Today, serve your healing.
Serve your boundaries.
Serve your joy. Serve your future. Because the people who truly love you don’t want the exhausted version of you. They want the healthy, whole, authentic you.
So before you ask, “Who needs me today?”
Ask,“Have I shown up for myself first?”
That’s not selfish.That’s sustainable.
